Diets high in fat, sugar and processed foods are lowering children's IQ, a new study suggests.
A predominantly processed-food diet at the age of three is directly associated with a lower IQ at the age of eight and a half, according to a Bristol-based study of thousands of British children.
The Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children is tracking the long-term health and wellbeing of around 14,000 children.
Food packed with vitamins and nutrients notably helped boost mental performance as youngsters got older, the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health reports.
Researchers said toddlers' diets could change IQ levels later in childhood, even if eating habits improve with age.
"This suggests that any cognitive/behavioural effects relating to eating habits in early childhood may well persist into later childhood, despite any subsequent changes to dietary intake," the authors wrote.
During the study, parents completed questionnaires detailing the types and frequency of the food and drink their children consumed when they were three, four, seven and eight-and-a-half years old.
Every one-point increase in the study's dietary pattern score – a record of processed fat intake – was associated with a 1.67-point fall in IQ.
The brain grows at its fastest rate during the first three years of life.
"It is possible that good nutrition during this period may encourage optimal brain growth," the report added.
The School Food Trust's director of research, Michael Nelson, said: "Given that around 23% of children start school either overweight or obese, it's absolutely clear that healthy choices as part of their early development will stand children in good stead – not only for keeping a healthy weight as they grow up, but as this evidence suggests, improving their ability to do well at school.

Mr. Obama’s suggestion that power balance businesses
Mr. Obama’s suggestion that power balance businesses can help the economy recover by spending their reserves was met with skepticism by some in the audience. Harold Jackson, a executive at Buffalo Supply Inc., a medical supply company, called it naïve.
“Any business person has to look at the demand to their company for their product and services, and make hiring decisions,” Mr. Jackson said. “I think it’s a little outside the bounds to suggest that if we hire people we don’t need, there will be more demand.”
Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader in the Senate, said in remarks Monday that “we’ll just have to wait and see whether the administration’s actions support its rhetoric.” Mr. McConnell urged Mr. Obama to prove his intentions to help the business community by doing more to push free trade agreements with Colombia and Panama.
At the same time, Mr. Obama’s cheap power balance decision to address the chamber in the first place has upset liberal groups, who say the president is consorting with the very forces they believe have worked to undercut his policies.
Public Citizen, a liberal group in Washington, issued a statement condemning the president’s comment that he would “go anywhere” in the world to promote trade, a line that prompted one of the few moments of applause from the crowd of business leaders.
“It’s unclear what is more mortifying: President Barack Obama choosing the club of America’s notorious job-offshorers to talk about the importance of creating American jobs, or his rallying of his fiercest political opponents to help him overcome the majority of Americans who oppose more-of-the-same job-killing trade agreements,” said Lori Wallach, the director of Public Citizen’s Global Trade Watch.
Erica Payne, the founder of the Agenda Project, a liberal organization in New York, said: “Two weeks ago, the president promised that he would work to rebuild people’s faith in government. Meeting with the biggest lobbyists in the country is hardly a step in the right direction.”
In an interview after Mr. Obama’s speech, Ms. Payne said the president’s speech had “many words, little content.” power balance wholesale

Report all of your income
The IRS uses information returns, such as W-2s and 1099s, to cross-check income reporting. Under its document-matching program, the IRS' computers compare information on the forms with the income reported by taxpayers on their returns. If the information doesn't match, this leads to an automatic audit. But don't panic; it's merely a correspondence asking about the discrepancy. It can be easily cleared up by submitting an explanation by mail if you think you are correct, or paying the tax owed if the omission was your oversight and the IRS is correct.
Sole proprietors, freelancers and independent contractors who use the cash method of accounting may be vulnerable to year-end payment problems. For instance, a sole proprietor that performed work for a client may have received a payment in early January – but the client might have mailed (and recorded) the payment in December. The client will include the payment on Form 1099-MISC for 2010, but it isn't taxable until 2011. What to do: Include the payment as it is reported on the 2010 return, but then subtract the payment and attach an explanation with the return. Then include the payment on the 2011 return, even though no 1099 will be issued for this year.

part of the 'Downton Abbey' cast
Actress Joanne Froggatt is part of the 'Downton Abbey' cast. The next great "Masterpiece Theater" series has arrived Movado watches.
"Downton Abbey," set on an English country estate in the years directly preceding World War I, captures everything that viewers loved about "Upstairs, Downstairs" or "Pride and Prejudice."
It shares some DNA from both those productions, as well as the movie "Gosford Park."
Downton Abbey is an estate inherited by Robert Movado watches, Earl of Grantham (Hugh Bonneville). It's a cozy, safe, luxurious world, except that Robert faces a problem. He has three daughters and the estate's "entail" specifies it can only be passed to a male heir, however distant.
This central dilemma sets in motion a dozen family dominoes primarily involving his American wife, Cora (Elizabeth McGovern); their eldest daughter, Mary (Michelle Dockery), and the potential male heir, Robert's third cousin, Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens).
Meanwhile, in the sometimes separate and sometimes intertwined world of the servants who do the actual work at Downton, other dramas are playing out, propelled in part by the changing world outside the Downton bubble.
The filming and settings are stunningly lush, with light pouring into massive sitting rooms and an English landscape where somehow it never seems to rain.
The acting makes the characters leap to life Movado watches online shop, giving us full-color portraits from even modest bits of screentime.
Among the downstairs ensemble, the Earl's valet, Bates (Brendan Coyle); the butler, Carson (Jim Carter); the maid, Anna (Joanne Froggatt), and head housekeeper, Mrs. Hughes (Phyllis Logan), stand out.
Upstairs, the show is stolen at least once an episode by Maggie Smith as the Earl's mother, Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham.
It could be argued that Smith is given many of the best lines, but it could be argued just as strongly they become the best because of her skill at delivering them.
"Downton Abbey" launched this past summer on British TV as a seven-part series and it's been converted to four parts here, running for the next four Sundays.
As is standard procedure for "Masterpiece Theater" dramas, viewers won't feel they fully grasp matters until partway through the first episode. A few surprises remain to be sprung after that, but by the end of Sunday's episode, viewers will comfortably grasp both the lineup and the major plots.
The biggest concern of many viewers may be the ending, which leaves some though not all matters unresolved.
Fortunately, that concern has a satisfactory explanation, which is that a second "Downton Abbey" series has been commissioned and is expected to play on British television later this year.
That's good news for anyone who enjoys quality drama on television - and once again should shatter any lingering delusion that "Masterpiece Theater" dramas are dry, snooty or dulllife Movado watches online shop.

European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton
European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton power balance said “urgent progress” is needed toward Middle East peace as she began a visit to the region.
Ashton, who will be in Israel shop today and the West Bank tomorrow, said in an e-mailed statement ahead of her visit that “there is no alternative to a negotiated solution” between Israel and the Palestinians.
Ashton’s visit comes after Palestinian officials have said they would like to see the European Union take a more active role in their negotiations with Israel, which broke down in September.
The talks collapsed after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu refused to renew a 10-month freeze on settlement construction in the West Bank. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has said that he won’t return to talks until settlement building ends.
Abbas said on Jan. 2 that a peace deal could be reached within two months if Netanyahu was ready to make decisions on core issues such as borders, security, refugees and the future of east Jerusalem.
Netanyahu replied that he is ready to sit jackets with Abbas “until smoke rises,” once the Palestinian leader is prepared to resume direct negotiations that would address the core issues.
The Israeli leader will meet Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Jan. 6 in the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh in what his office said is an effort to “put together ways to move regional peace forward.”
