Coast Guard cutter unleashed cannon fire on the abandoned 164-foot Ryou-Un Maru on Thursday, ending a cheap toms journey that began when last year's tsunami dislodged it and set it adrift across the Pacific Ocean.
It sank into waters more than 6,000 feet deep in the Gulf of Alaska, about 180 miles west of the southeast Alaska coast, the Coast Guard said.
The crew pummeled the ghost ship with high explosive ammunition, and the Ryou-Un Maru soon burst into flames, took on water and began listing, officials said.
A huge column of smoke could be seen over the gulf as a Coast Guard C-130 cargo plane, sent to observe the sinking, dropped a buoy to monitor for any possible pollution from the sunken ship.
The Coast Guard warned mariners to stay away, and aviation authorities did the same for pilots.
In about four hours, the ship vanished into the water, said Chief Petty Officer Kip Wadlow in Juneau.
Officials decided to sink the ship rather than risk the chance of it running aground or endangering other vessels in the busy shipping lanes between North America and Asia.
The ship had no lights or communications system, and its tank was able to carry more than 2,000 gallons of diesel fuel. Officials, however, didn't know how much fuel, if any, was aboard.
"It's less risky than it would be running into shore or running into (maritime) traffic," Coast Guard spokesman Paul Webb said.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency studied the problem and decided it is safer to sink the ship and let the fuel evaporate in the fashion trends sale open water.
A light sheen and minimal debris were visible as the vessel sunk, but the sheen is expected to quickly dissipate, the Coast Guard said in a news release.
The ship was at Hokkaido, Japan, and destined for scrapping when a magnitude-9.0 earthquake that struck the country in March 2011 triggered a tsunami.
The waves dislodged the vessel and set it adrift. In total, about 5 million tons of debris was swept out to sea.
The boat did not have any cargo aboard, Webb said. He said he didn't know who owned the Ryou-Un Maru, which had been traveling about 1 mph in recent days.
As the Coast Guard was readying to fire on the vessel, a Canadian fishing vessel, the 62-foot Bernice C, claimed salvage rights over the ghost ship in international waters.
Plans to sink it were halted so the Canadian crew could have a chance to take the stricken ship. A Canadian official with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press that the Bernice C was unable to tow it.
That delay, in part, prompted the cargo plane to return to Kodiak, Alaska, before the ship sank because the plane burned up fuel while circling the area monitoring the situation.
The Canadian boat left, and once it was about 6 miles from the Japanese vessel, the Coast Guard began to fire, first with 25 mm shells, then a few hours later with ammunition twice that size.
In the year since the tsunami, the debris from Japan has washed up on shores across the Pacific.
In January, a half dozen large buoys suspected to be from Japanese oyster farms appeared at the top of Alaska's panhandle and may be among the first debris from the tsunami.
State health and environmental officials have said there's little need to be worried that debris landing on Alaska shores will be contaminated by radiation.
The earthquake triggered the toms shoes on sale world's worst nuclear crisis since the Chernobyl accident in 1986.
State officials have been working with federal counterparts to gauge the danger of debris including material affected by a damaged nuclear power plant, to see if Alaska residents, seafood or wild game could be affected.

Smith on Tuesday had seemed to take offense to comments Obama
Holder spoke a day after 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Jerry Smith questioned President Barack cheap jeffrey campbell shoes Obama's remarks this week about an "unelected" court possibly striking down the president's health care overhaul. Smith, during oral arguments in a separate challenge to the health law, asked the Justice Department for a three-page, single-spaced letter affirming the federal court's authority.

When asked during a Wednesday news conference in Chicago what an appropriate response to Smith would be, Holder said, "I think what the president said a couple of days ago was appropriate. He indicated that we obviously respect the decisions that courts make."
"Under our system of government ... courts have the final say on the constitutionality of statutes," Holder said. "The courts are also fairly deferential when it comes to overturning statutes that the duly elected representatives of the people, Congress, pass."
The White House, meanwhile, struggled for a third day to explain Obama's original remark that a Supreme Court reversal of the case would be "unprecedented."
White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters in Washington that Obama does not regret using that word, and he insisted Obama was not trying to bully the justices by weighing in before the case is decided.
"It's the reverse of intimidation," Carney said during a lengthy defense of Obama's comments. "He's simply making an observation about precedent and the fact that he expects the fashion trends 2012 court to adhere to that precedent."
A reversal would not be unprecedented, even under the very narrow terms Obama and his spokesman later attached to his comments, but it would be very unusual.
Obama had sought to clarify his remarks under questioning at The Associated Press annual meeting on Tuesday. There, Obama said he was referring only to a specific class of constitutional law, and to the pattern of judicial deference to Congress exemplified by the upholding of New Deal legislation in the 1930s.
Carney on Wednesday said Obama's remarks were the object of criticism "only because a handful of people didn't seem to understand what he was referring to."
Carney also repeated Holder's assurance that the Justice Department would comply with the Texas judge's demand for a letter of explanation.
Smith on Tuesday had seemed to take offense to comments Obama made Monday that he didn't believe the Supreme Court would take the "unprecedented" step of overturning a law passed by a strong majority of Congress. He said he wanted reassurance that Holder and the Justice Department recognized judicial authority.
"The letter needs to be at least three pages, single spaced, no less and it needs to be specific. It needs to make specific reference to the president's statements," Smith said during a case brought in part by a spine and joint hospital in East Texas that is challenging the constitutionality of a portion of the health care law.
Smith's office in Houston said Wednesday the judge would not be commenting on the issue because the case before his court still is pending. Smith, a native Texan, was nominated to the appeals court by President Ronald Reagan and confirmed by the Senate in 1987.

In Chicago, Holder said he's confident the Supreme Court will find the Affordable Care Act constitutional "given the adequate, able representation" the law had during arguments before the justices. He said Solicitor General Donald Verrilli Jr. "did a great job."
Speaking at the same Chicago press conference during a meeting on health care fraud prevention, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said her department is continuing to implement the health care law without contingency plans for a Supreme Court ruling against it.

The new iPad is so good that the nonprofit Consumer Reports
The iPad “establishes a new benchmark of excellence,” Consumer Reports said Monday.
Apple declined to comment.
The report further affirms Apple’s lead in the booming tablet business as competitors strive to catch up. Google, one of Apple’s primary rivals, is widely expected by analysts to sell a tablet directly to consumers this year. Google declined to comment.
Apple, already the most valuable company in the world, saw its stock rise about 3.2 percent to $618.68 in regular trading on Monday. Bolstering the price was a Topeka Capital Markets report that predicted the stock would reach $1,001.
Consumer Reports said a few weeks ago that the new iPad generates more heat than previous versions, especially when it runs graphics-heavy games. But the magazine “didn’t find those temperatures to be cause for concern,” reviewer Donna Tapellini wrote.
The review also addressed another issue it raised with previous versions of the iPad. In March, Consumer Reports said that in at least one testing scenario, the iPad lost battery charge when it was operating while plugged into an outlet.
But tests on the new iPad showed that only happened when “the device was playing a demanding game with the screen fully bright,” Tapellini wrote.
In 2010, the magazine said it could not endorse the iPhone 4 because it lost signal while held in a certain way. But the antennae issue was fixed in the next version of the iPhone, dubbed the “4S,” and the handset returned to Consumer Reports’ recommended list.
In regards to the new iPad, the magazine said the camera was good and its 4G network (tested on Verizon’s network) was very fast. Battery life was better than rivals.
But it saved its highest praise for the iPad’s new display, which is “the best we’ve seen,” the magazine said. In fact, Consumer Reports said it is adjusting its standard for excellence in tablet screens based on the new device.
The only problem with the display?
“The new iPad’s display does, in at least some applications, serve to magnify imperfections in content designed for lower-screen resolution,” Tapellini wrote. The magazine expects that this will change over time as
more content is developed for high-definition tablet displays.

Jennifer Lopez 's fashion hair extensions and Brooklyn Decker cheap toms
Jennifer, 42, rocked the dress during "American Idol" in L.A. on March 22. Always one to heap on the jewelry, the "AI" judge added a black Hermes cuff, hoop earrings, black Gucci and cheap toms platform sandals, and a sleek ponytail.
Brooklyn, 24, sported the look at the Met Gala in NYC way back on May 2, 2011. The model-turned-actress let her gown do all the talking, and finished off her look with a silver clutch and nude strappy heels also by Kors.
I think we can all agree that Lopez is hot in almost anything! Here, the "On the Floor" singer's gown shows off her svelte physique (although the fabric does gather a little at the waist) and it really compliments her dark hair and complexion.Lodge co-owner Dean Bruemmer, who helped with the search Saturday, said he last saw his friend at breakfast. He said True gave no indication of a specific route, which made the search more difficult.
“There are a lot of trailheads animal print toms up the road,” said Bruemmer, whose lodge is about four miles from the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument.
Though daytime temperatures in southwest New Mexico have been mild of late, temperatures dipped into the mid-20s on recent nights. True left for his run wearing shorts and a T-shirt and carrying a water bottle.
Fourteen search teams that were scouring the area Friday were supplemented with additional volunteer teams from across the state Saturday morning, state police spokesman Lt. Robert McDonald said. Teams were hiking and on horseback and ATVs. They also used dogs and employed a helicopter and plane in the search.
Bemis said crews likely would begin removing True’s body by horseback or litter team Saturday night. But he said the body probably wouldn’t make it out of the area until Sunday because of the terrain.
True, who had been friends with Bruemmer and his wife, Jane, for 10 years, would often visit their lodge while traveling between Mexico and his Boulder, Colo., home. As a result, Bruemmer said, True knew the trail system well—which made his disappearance all the more mystifying.
Michael Sandrock, a columnist who writes about running for The Daily Camera newspaper in Boulder, knew True for at least 20 years and had run with him. He called True a pioneer of the sport of ultrarunning, which involves running extreme distances, often on grueling terrain and many miles longer than a traditional 26-mile marathon.
True, he said, had a rebellious spirit but never sought to draw attention to himself even as he became legendary for his talents, which included “just going up and running for hours and hours at a time.”
“He’s just authentic and genuine. … Micah is a guy who follows his bliss,” Sandrock said.
He described True as a “legend” among ultrarunners.

She even has an advantage over her competition, because she opted for minimal accessories and simple fashion trends pos hair and makeup to go with her attention-grabbing dress. For that reason, I declare Brooklyn the winner! Do you agree?

the 28-year-old has been on the move
Fashion, he says, has been a part of his life as long as he can remember, since boyhood in Paris. It started through a passion for drawing, which eventually became mostly fashion drawing.
“I don’t think there was a single moment when I got into fashion. When you live in Paris, and fashion is such a Celine handbags 2012, 60% off, Cheap price celine tote bag online point of pride for the French, it’s always around and you’re very much exposed to it from an early age. It was always something I knew about and really liked,” he says.
Since coming to the U.S., first to attend Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania and then to New York to intern for Marc Jacobs, the 28-year-old has been on the move. He knows the Jacobs gig was a lucky break, especially since he’s not sure he was qualified for it. But he worked hard, he says, and was like a sponge soaking up everything he could and using that to grow his talent. From there, he worked for Proenza Schouler and then Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy.
While there, he realized he was forming his own voice and was ready to say something that could only come from his own womenswear label, which debuted in 2008. He says he felt confident on the creative side, but a little unsure in business. That’s where his parents, both investment bankers, came in, and he learned from them. (His mother is still active in the company and is his most trusted adviser.)
The $300,000 CFDA prize he received last year didn’t hurt, either. He spent it on production and a new office, but it’s the mentorship he received from different forces in the industry that he found most valuable, he says. Sure, he has competitors, but he finds that most people realize that it’s better for the fashion industry to have many success stories instead of a handful. “We do band together and support each other.”
He adds: “You are the designer, but you have to have strong relationships with the commercial side of the business — sales and press. You don’t design in a vacuum. You need to be aware of what’s happening in the company and sales. It makes you a better designer, even if it’s not what you thought you set out to do.”
So, each day is a balancing act between creating unique, beautiful things and hitting the zeitgeist so that women will want to buy them. Each new collection is a full journey.
“It starts with a story or a mood, but usually the place it starts is not the place it ends up. You have to start with your gut, an idea you are willing to commit to for the next six months, and the idea will take a life of its own and develop as you work on fabrics and start drawing,” he says. “I try to stay open to change, but I also try not to change my mind constantly.”
His newest collection was inspired by the European comic character Corto Maltese, of whom Altuzarra was a fan as a child. There is something very global and multi-ethnic about the sailor character, although he’s very cosmopolitan, too, Altuzarra explains, and that’s what he was trying to infuse into his clothes.
CFDA deputy director Lisa Smilor has been a fan of Altuzarra since the designer’s earliest days, when he was still showing in his apartment.
“I knew that I was in the room with someone special hearing the way Joseph talked about the clothes,” she says. “It was clearly evident that he was passionate about his craft but that he also understood the importance of establishing a profitable business. The questions he asked were very smart, and I knew that he had the winning combination: great talent and a good sense of the industry.”
Success will continue to come in steps, Altuzarra says, but a bellwether moment came last year when he saw fashion editors trace a blossoming trend in floral prints to his runway show.
The recognition makes him a little nervous, though.
“The fashion industry has a tendency to embrace someone and drop them. You don’t want to be the It boy, the flash in the pan, which is why I’m really concerned and try not to be too exposed. I don’t go to too many parties or do too much press.”

In Paris, what I did that was very French used to be smoking but that’s gone — and I’m really happy about that.”

Robert Bales is accused of sneaking off his base on March
The families were told that the new shop cheap money came from President Barack Obama. The unusually large payouts were the latest move by the White House to mend relations with the Afghan people after the killings threatened to shatter already tense relations.
Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales is accused of sneaking off his base on March 11, then creeping into houses in two nearby villages and opening fire on families as they slept.
The killings came as tensions between the U.S. and Afghanistan were strained following the burning of Qurans at a U.S. base in February. That act -- which U.S. officials have said was a mistake -- sparked riots and attacks that killed more than 30 people, including six American soldiers.
There have been no violent protests following the March 11 shootings in Kandahar province's Panjwai district, but demands for justice on Afghan terms have been getting louder since Bales was flown out of the country to a U.S. military prison.
Many Afghans in Kandahar have continued to argue that there must have been multiple gunmen and accused the U.S. government of using Bales as a scapegoat.
U.S. investigators say they believe the herve leger outlet gunman returned to his base after the first attack and later slipped away to kill again.
That would seem to support the U.S. government's assertion that the shooter acted alone, since the killings would have been perpetrated over a longer period of time than assumed when Bales was detained outside his base in Kandahar province's Panjwai district.
Bales has been charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder and other crimes and could face the death penalty if convicted.
The families of the dead received the money Saturday at the governor's office, said Kandahar provincial council member Agha Lalai. He and community elder Jan Agha confirmed the payout amounts.
Survivors previously had received smaller compensation payments from Afghan officials -- $2,000 for each death and $1,000 for each person wounded.
Two U.S. officials confirmed that compensation had been paid but declined to discuss exact amounts, saying only that the payments reflected the devastating nature of the incident. The officials spoke anonymously because of the sensitivity of the subject.
The provided compensation figures would mean that at least $866,000 was paid out in all. Afghan officials and villagers have counted 16 dead -- 12 in the village of Balandi and four in neighboring Alkozai -- and six wounded. The U.S. military has charged Bales with 17 murders without explaining the discrepancy.
The 38-year-old soldier, who is from Lake Tapps, Wash., is accused of using his 9mm pistol and M4 rifle prom dress 2012 to kill four men, four women, two boys and seven girls, then burning some of the bodies. The ages of the children were not disclosed in the charge sheet.

The clearer the fashions, the easier to find a bargain,” said Amanda Hallay, assistant clinical professor at fashion college LIM, based in Manhattan.
If you know the style and brand you want, price-comparison apps like eBay’s RedLaser can make finding the best deal easier.
And if you’re not wedded to any label, sites like shefinds.com offer guides to sales and online coupon codes, along with blogs and photos of what celebrities are wearing, says Dan Grandpre, editor-in-chief of deal aggregator Dealnews.com.
Make sure you follow their favorite stores’ Twitter feeds and Facebook pages to get special discounts.
Chasing trends can easily get expensive. Fight that by investing in styles that you will still find appealing even when they’re no longer trendy.
“You have to prioritize. If you are going to spend on shoes, you can cheap out on accessories,” said Jodi Furman, author of a blog called Livefabuless.com, which offers tips on smart spending.
Here are four trends for the spring 2012 fashion trends season and how to sport them without breaking the bank:
— Boat shoes: Boat shoes — the brown leather shoes with rubber soles that had their fashion heyday in the 1980s — have made a big comeback this spring. But they’ve gotten a major makeover.
Retailers are stocking a rainbow of versions in brightly colored hues like neon yellow and hot pink, funky print designs and different materials — at varying prices.
If you’re on a tight budget, Payless Shoe Source offers a version from Dexter for $24.99. If you want to splurge, Gucci has them for $530.
If you want lots to pick from, it’s hard to beat online shoe retailer Zappos, which lists more than 700 types of boat shoes for men, women, and children — 70 brands in 25 colors and 15 materials, from rubber to mesh.
Purists can turn to the creator — Sperry, which introduced the shoe in 1935. Its site sperrytopsider.com lists prices from about $60 to $300, and shoppers will find varied styles and colors. The $300 version is for the “authentic original,” which is handcrafted and made in Maine.
If you don’t mind something pre-worn, you can try second-hand stores or vintage shops.
And for the ultimate in savings, try looking in your attic or the back of your closet to see if you have kept those shoes from your college days; with just a little polish, the shoes could get a second life.
— Super skinny jeans: A wide variety of retailers are pushing super skinny pants as tight as leggings. At the lower end, H&M and Target have them for about $25 or less.
And good news if you’re carrying a few extra winter pounds: This season, the look is being paired with oversized tops that camouflage any bulges, rather than the skin-tight tops of seasons past.
“You don’t have to be skinny to enjoy the skinny jeans,” Hallay says.
— Brightly colored prints: paisley, tie-die and “super flower.”
With prints, remember that you don’t have to buy the whole outfit to be trendy — they can grab a scarf or a belt, or just a T-shirt, says Furman. A little color can go a long way.
And a scarf doesn’t just have to be a scarf. Retailers are also marketing them as headdresses and even as tops.
You can also mix and match without looking out of fashion, says David Wolfe, creative director at The Doneger Group.
“This season, you can go crazy with 2012 Sale bandage herve leger outlet store color,” he says.
— Cuff bracelets: These chunky, wide bracelets can be found in all shapes, sizes and materials, from plastic to silver.
If you want unusual styles, try fab.com, which focuses on daily flash sales of unique designs including accessories that can be as low as $25, Grandpre says.
You can also check out Forever 21 and Payless at the mall, where you can get cuff bracelets for under $10. But don’t limit yourself to low-price stores; the bracelets can be affordable even at high-end stores.
“This is a very democratic season,” says Hallay. “Everyone can find something that fits in their own budget.”
