Herve Leger comes out fighting with gladiator-inspired show

Herve Leger's skintight designs are not for the faint-hearted. But it was the  shoes posing most challenge to the models yesterday at the label's catwalk  show.So vertiginous were the heels at the show, that one model took an  embarrassing tumble, in full view of the star-studded front row. The girl in  question maintained her composure, gamely smiling as she adjusted her shoe to  continue.

Herve LegerCelebrities including Mischa Barton, Diana Ross, Lucy Liu and Mad Men's  January Jones were at New York's Bryant Park to view the collection, which was  designed by veteran designer Max Azria.

The  'buy one get more than a hundred free' dress that's made up of 120 zips and can  be worn endless ways
Azria remained true to the brand's signature aesthetic, with a series of  figure-hugging bandage dresses, though embellishment in the form of beads and  sequins made this undeniably eveningwear.

Fighting spirit: Knee-high boots and strong  shoulderlines lent the line a pleasingly aggressive aesthetic
Designer Max Azria with Lucy LiuThere was something of a fierce gladiator theme running through the  collection - and not just thanks to those sky-high strappy sandals.Crossover straps and metallic finishes mimicked breastplates and armour.  Exaggerated shoulderpads were another key look, making for a strong silhouette,  while knee-high boots added to the pleasingly aggressive look.Absent from the collection however was the label's usual sense of fun.  Countless celebrities have favoured its rainbow-bright dresses on the red carpet  in the past, but the latest offering saw a muted bronze and black palette  peppered with shades of grey.Perhaps it was a subtle reference to fashion's current sombre mood, but the  choice of toned-down hues resulted in a more expensive and luxurious look.
The 'stealth wealth' feel of the collection is a clear sign that Azria is  paying attention to market trends - shoppers are seeking 'investment' buys,  rather than one-hit-wonders - and almost every piece in Herve Leger's Autumn  collection is set to be a future classic.
